The good part about VDMX is that you can set specific effects to react to certain frequencies, low frequencies like a bass drum or the opposite.
This is why it works well for live performances or projection installations.
There are other programs that can be used however VDMX is my program of choice for this kind of work.
Drawbacks to something like this is if you did want to record a set video, they can be quite large in file size. As cool as they are, so much happens on screen that it just ends up taking up lots of space.
Additionally, the live nature of it lends itself well to seeing mistakes, jitters and transitions which is apart of the charm in a venue but odd in a recording.
